Mutual aid meetings are free, they run most days, and there is no waiting list, no referral and no assessment. You can walk into one this week. They work alongside whatever else you choose rather than instead of it, and plenty of people use them and nothing else.

What actually happens at a first meeting

You do not have to speak, and you do not have to give your surname. Most meetings open with a reading, someone shares for a while, and others speak if they want to. It lasts about an hour, and it is free, though a basket goes round for the room hire. Nobody takes a register and nobody will ask you to commit to anything.

An open meeting can be attended by anyone, including family. A closed meeting is for people who think they may have a problem themselves. If the first group does not suit you, the next one along will feel different, because each has its own character. The usual advice is to try three before deciding it is not for you.

Whether you use the free NSW route or a private rehab centre, a typical treatment plan for drug and alcohol addiction combines a few things: medical care where withdrawal needs to be supervised, evidence-based therapies such as cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) and SMART Recovery, individual and group counsel, and psychoeducation that feeds into the relapse prevention plan you take away with you. A residential rehab program is one route into this; a public or community-based recovery program is another, and for many people the two work together rather than against each other. Good addiction treatment is non-judgemental and increasingly trauma-informed, recognising that past experience and physical and mental health more broadly are often part of the picture alongside drug use or alcohol use, and that carers and family are affected too.

Detox on its own is rarely enough. Whichever route you take, the aim is effective treatment, not just withdrawal, and a sustainable, drug-free recovery journey afterwards.

Private and residential rehab for people in Wollongong and Sydney

There is no residential rehab centre we can confirm based in Wollongong itself. For Illawarra residents, residential detox and rehabilitation are accessed either by referral through the New South Wales public alcohol and drug service, or privately at rehab services elsewhere in the state, many of them in the greater Sydney region a little over an hour to the north. The most reliable way to find what is genuinely available and has a place now is to call the national hotline or ask your GP, rather than to trust any single directory listing. In practice a residential stay almost always means travelling, whichever route you choose, which is worth knowing when you weigh up treatment further afield.

In New South Wales, government-funded residential rehabilitation is provided at low or no cost to the person, following assessment through the public alcohol and drug service, and a place can involve a waiting list. Private residential rehab, including private hospital-based detox, is charged privately. Published Australian rehab directories commonly list a 28-day private residential stay from roughly AUD 10,000 upward, rising well beyond AUD 25,000–30,000 at the higher, luxury end. These are indicative directory ranges, not quotes, and every centre sets its own fees.

Where the limits are	It is not a hospital and not a detox unit. Where a medically supervised detox is clinically needed it is completed in an appropriate medical setting before admission and billed separately. Qualified nurses are part of the team throughout the stay.

What happens afterwards	Aftercare is agreed before you leave: a session every week for a full year, online or in person at the PROMIS clinics in London, which is more than 48 sessions in the twelve months after discharge. Which addiction recovery program and rehab services are right for you

Start with the free public route if you are unsure, if cost is the barrier, or if you want to stay near family and work in the Illawarra. Use Alcoholics Anonymous or Narcotics Anonymous alongside whatever else you choose. A private residential stay in New South Wales if you need detox and rehabilitation together under one roof and want to stay reasonably close to home. Treatment abroad only for the small number of people for whom distance genuinely helps, who can travel, and who do not need an immediate hospital detox, and even then a European centre is a very long way from Wollongong, so weigh it honestly against a local or Sydney-region option.
