Free and low-cost options in Bali

Start here. In Indonesia the state guarantees a route to rehabilitation, and for a great many people these free and public treatment options are the right first step, whatever type of rehab eventually follows.

• BNN state rehabilitation (Badan Narkotika Nasional). Indonesia’s national narcotics agency runs rehabilitation and addiction treatment that is free of charge and borne by the state, a right protected under Law No. 35 of 2009. The provincial office, BNN Provinsi Bali, handles consultation and helps arrange placement, usually at the centre nearest your home. This is the first door to knock on.
• Rumah Sakit Jiwa Provinsi Bali (Bali Provincial Mental Hospital, Bangli). Bali’s public psychiatric hospital provides NAPZA (drug and substance) services for substance use disorder, including detoxification and rehabilitation, on both an outpatient and inpatient basis, at low public-hospital fees. It is on Jalan Kesuma Yudha in Bangli.
• Alcoholics Anonymous (AA) Bali. Free peer-support meetings run daily in English across the island, from Seminyak and Sanur to Ubud, and have done since the early 1990s, helping people stay sober and lower the risk of relapse. No referral, no fee.
• Narcotics Anonymous (NA) Bali. Free English-language meetings run from Ubud to Canggu to the Bukit, open to anyone who thinks they may have a problem with drugs, and a valuable part of any recovery journey. They work alongside whatever rehab centre or treatment programme you choose.

Private residential rehab in Bali

Unlike some destinations, Bali does have private residential rehab centres, offering a high level of care with accommodation, therapy and medical support included, and many of them are set up largely for foreign visitors, with treatment delivered in English. That is a genuine local option, not a mirage. It is also an unregulated market by international standards, so if you are weighing up a private treatment centre, check who owns and clinically governs it, ask what medical support is on site, and confirm exactly what is included in the cost before you commit. No individual Bali centre is named or recommended here.

As a guide to cost, the recovery.com directory lists private residential rehab in Bali from roughly US$6,500 to more than US$30,000 a month, with luxury rehab and ultra-luxury programmes running far higher. In pounds that is broadly £5,100 to upwards of £23,500 a month, which is indicative only and moves with the exchange rate.

Whether you are weighing free rehab through BNN, rehab treatment at the public hospital in Bangli, or private rehab abroad, a few basics apply everywhere. Ask what rehab services are included in the price: is it inpatient rehab or an outpatient programme, does it cover a full medically supervised detox, and are individual and group therapy sessions built into every week. Check the rehab facilities and staffing, confirm what aftercare is offered once the residential programme ends, and be clear on whether the fee covers drug rehab, alcohol rehab treatment, or a combined drug and alcohol consumption and rehab admission, since these rehab options are not interchangeable. If alcohol addiction, drug addiction, or a wider substance use disorder is involved alongside other mental health issues, ask how the team handles that too. None of this is unique to Bali: it is the same due diligence worth doing before admission into rehab anywhere, and it protects your long-term recovery, not just your budget.

What rehab in Bali actually costs

The honest headline is that rehab costs, and how much rehab costs specifically, depend entirely on which route you take, and the range is enormous. BNN state rehabilitation and AA or NA meetings cost nothing, the public hospital route in Bangli sits at low public-hospital fees, and private rehab, whether a rehab clinic in Bali or a treatment and rehabilitation centre further abroad, sits at the other end of the scale. Whatever the figure, the cost of treatment only makes sense once you know what is included in the cost, not just the headline number.

Which option is right for you

There is no single right rehab centre for everyone, and the type of rehab that fits your budget, your health and your circumstances is the one worth choosing among these treatment options. Start with BNN or the public mental hospital in Bangli if cost is the barrier, if you live in Indonesia, or if you want to stay close to family and work. Use AA or NA alongside whatever you choose, from the first week, since ongoing peer support helps protect both physical and mental health and supports long-term recovery. A private residential centre in Bali can make sense if you want intensive residential care locally, in English, and can meet the fee, provided you have checked its licensing and medical cover. Treatment further abroad, such as Spain, is worth weighing only if a private stay is within reach, distance from your usual environment would help, you can travel, and you do not need an immediate hospital detox. Where a local option serves you better, take it, and wherever you seek treatment, asking for help matters more than any stigma attached to addiction.

The underlying categories are the same almost everywhere: free rehab, rehab through a public hospital, private rehab locally such as the drug and alcohol rehab centres in Bali set up for foreign visitors, or a residential rehab programme further abroad. Alcohol rehabilitation and drug rehab often overlap, because drug and alcohol addiction, or drug or alcohol addiction on its own, commonly sits alongside a wider pattern of substance abuse, and cutting alcohol consumption or drug abuse safely usually needs medical support rather than willpower alone. Whether it is rehab for alcohol, rehab for drugs, or an alcohol and drug rehab combined, ask about the cost of alcohol rehab or the cost of drug treatment before you commit, and remember that alcohol or drug problems both respond to the same core addiction recovery approach, whatever it is called.
