How Much Does Drug and Alcohol Rehab Cost in France?

Getting help in France: the free and public options

France has a well-developed public system for alcohol or drug addiction care, including specialist help for drugs and alcohol problems, and the front door to it costs nothing. The specialist services below are free, and several can be reached anonymously, without a referral and without insurance. For most people, this is the sensible place to begin, whatever treatment options or type of rehab eventually turns out to be right for you.

Free and confidential services

• CSAPA (public addiction centres): Centres de soins, d’accompagnement et de prévention en addictologie are free, confidential and open to anyone, including families. There are around 385 across France, in every department, staffed by doctors, psychologists and social workers, and you can attend anonymously. Depending on the centre, care can include assessment, outpatient treatment and therapy sessions, help with drug use, drug and alcohol consumption or drug abuse, referral on to inpatient detox where it is needed, and aftercare support for co-occurring mental health conditions. Addiction specialists draw up individual treatment plans covering drug rehabilitation and drug detoxification as well as alcohol dependence, though waiting lists can apply at busier centres. • Drogues Info Service: a free, anonymous national helpline on 0 800 23 13 13, open 8am to 2am, seven days a week, for advice on drugs, alcohol and other addictions.
• Alcool Info Service: a free, anonymous alcohol helpline on 09 80 98 09 30, open every day from 8am to 2am, staffed by professionals trained in alcohol use and alcohol rehabilitation.
• Your médecin traitant (GP): your family doctor can assess you, arrange a supervised withdrawal where it is needed and refer you into specialist addiction care. Treatment through the public system is largely covered by Assurance Maladie.
• Alcoholics Anonymous and Narcotics Anonymous: free twelve-step peer support and group therapy for alcoholism or drug dependence, with English-language meetings in France. In Paris the English-speaking AA line is 07 56 98 45 71 (aaparis.org); there are also English-speaking groups on the south coast and across the south-west.

The private residential reality

Private residential rehab and drug and alcohol rehab centres do exist in France, whether you are seeking rehab for alcohol, drug and alcohol addiction, or another substance abuse problem, but this is a small and expensive part of the picture, and the French health system reimburses little or nothing towards private rehab clinics, alcohol and drug rehab, or luxury rehab. If a private residential stay or a shorter inpatient rehab admission is what you are weighing up, ask any centre you contact to show you its registration, to tell you who provides the clinical care and level of care on site, whether it offers individual and group therapy, and to set out exactly what the published price includes, what rehab facilities are on-site, and whether any additional costs apply on top of the average cost quoted. What treatment costs in France

The honest headline is that the free route costs nothing, and it is the right starting point for many people. Beyond that, the cost of treatment depends heavily on whether you use the public system or go private.

The public system

Care at a CSAPA is genuinely free rehab, with no hidden cost of treatment. Treatment in a public hospital is reimbursed at around 80% by Assurance Maladie, with the remaining share often covered by a mutuelle (top-up health insurance). Private clinics and luxury residential centres, by contrast, are reimbursed little or nothing, so those rehab costs usually fall to you, which is why understanding how much rehab costs matters most for anyone weighing up a private residential rehab stay. Any medical care needed for physical health complications during withdrawal, including ambulatory care and health care for a co-occurring mental disorder, is covered in the same way as other hospital care.

Private residential rehab

The figures here are indicative ranges drawn from published rehab directories, not quotes, and they vary widely by facility and length of stay. The cost of alcohol rehab treatment and the cost of drug rehab in France are broadly similar, since most private centres run one rehab programme covering both. Standard private residential care in France is commonly listed at roughly €2,500–€6,000 per week, which works out at about €10,000–€24,000 per month. High-end residential treatment stays of around three weeks are quoted at approximately €25,000–€40,000. Always confirm the current figure directly with any centre before admission into rehab, and before you decide what is included in the cost.

What moves the number: whether a detox is included, the length of stay, staffing ratios, the accommodation on offer, the range of rehab services provided and the standard of the setting.

Which option is right for you

For many people in France, the free and public route is the right rehab option and the right rehab centre to start with, and you do not have to pay to begin. A local French service is likely the better choice when:

• You have not yet contacted a CSAPA, your GP or a national helpline. These cost nothing and are the sensible first step if you want to seek treatment for drug or alcohol addiction.
• You need medically complex inpatient detox with a hospital on the same site.
• Being physically near family, children or work matters more to you than distance from your triggers, or you are managing wider physical and mental health needs best supported close to home.
• Treatment and rehabilitation in your own language and health system, close to home, is what you want.

Treatment abroad tends to suit people who want the same evidence-based model at a lower published cost than a private French rehab clinic, some real distance from the places tied to the habit, and care delivered in English that supports coping, well-being, staying sober and long-term recovery as part of a longer addiction recovery journey, reducing the risk of relapse along the way.
